 2023 letter from Our President

April 6, 2023

Dear Colleague,

Thank you to everyone who attended our virtual lecture by Dr. Evan Cohn.

We have some exciting news to share!     For the first time in NYSSRS history,

the NYSSRS  has received the 2023 ASRT Affiliate Award for Advocacy.

The ASRT recently informed us:

“Based on a nomination submitted by Samantha Skubish, R.T.(R)(T), the ASRT Committee on R.T. Advocacy has selected the New York State Society for Radiologic Sciences to receive this award, presented as part of the 2023 ASRT Annual Governance and House of Delegates meeting in Reno, Nevada, is given to an ASRT affiliate society that has demonstrated outstanding legislative or regulatory advocacy efforts on behalf of the radiologic sciences community.”

“It is a pleasure for the ASRT Board of Directors and members to recognize the New York State Society for Radiologic Sciences’ efforts in providing radiologic technologists and radiation therapists the knowledge, resources and support they need to advocate for professional standards and quality patient care. The New York State Society for Radiologic Sciences is truly deserving of this award.”

We are deeply grateful for this honor. We would like to thank our partner, RTANYS- Radiation Therapy Association of New York State for working with us and for the nomination.  We are inspired, witnessing their society and visions come to fruition.

We recognize Joe Whitton’s support for making this connection between NYSSRS and RTANYS.  Also, special thank you to our legislative committee, Cindy Close and Bob Geiser for their immeasurable commitment to meeting NYSSRS mission, protecting the interests of New York’s RT’s.

We would like to congratulate three of our members on their recently elected positions. Congratulations to:

Dear Colleague,

As we, as a community, try to step away from the pandemic into newer, more exciting times, your Board is pleased to announce many exciting, NEW things about your 2022 conference in Schenectady, New York.

To start with, it will be in beautiful Schenectady, NY, just a few hours from NYC.  This quaint location offers a fresh look for our conference.  Schenectady is home of a nearby Casino, aquarium and many historical sites.

This in-person conference will be held September 22-24 and will be a DUAL event with RTANYS, the Radiation Therapy Association of New York State.  This conference will offer unique networking opportunities along with at least 10 topical CE credits.  Our dual conference will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton, just five minutes from Rivers Casino.  Thanks to vendor sponsorships, this year’s conference will be less expensive than past years – how’s that for NEW?

Please plan to join us for this event, earlier this year, in September.  It will include student events, a new place to explore and excellent opportunities for all of us to collaborate.  Remember, this is an election year.  If you are interested, please reach out to our Nominating Committee Chair, Tabitha Sabater.

In closing, I’d like to thank each of you for your support to our profession and organization and let you know that we are looking forward to sharing a few surprises this year involving a new program to recognize and celebrate technologists!

All the Best,

Ray

Dear Friends,

On behalf of our entire board and committee chairs, we hope that this finds you and your family well.

As we enter the fifteenth month of COVID-19, we appear to see the light at the end of the long tunnel.  With most of our population vaccinated and with continued vigilance, we are starting to get back to normalcy in our personal and professional lives.

Your NYSSRS board has met six times since October of 2020.  Five of those meetings were held via Zoom and the last one, our spring board meeting, was held in-person in April.

It was during this in-person meeting that we decided to have an in-person annual conference in Corning, NY on October 21-23, 2021.  Careful precautionary steps to keep everyone safe including social distancing and cleaning protocols will be taken.

There were other changes made as a result of listening to many of you in the past.  These include:

v  *NEW FEATURE* After the annual conference, we will be offering 1-2 virtual presentations on a given date after our conference in October, 2021 (to be announced) to all members, free of charge.

v  The Student Quiz Bowl will be held on Friday, October 22nd instead of on Saturday.  Doing this will give our students a chance to focus their preparatory attention earlier in the conference so that they can better enjoy the rest of it.

v  A focus of this board is to become more involved in legislative bills in the NYS Assembly & Senate.  We have coordinated with the ASRT to display a legislative link on our NYSSRS.org website so that you can see the key issues involving our profession.  We have also petitioned our legislators on certain advocacy issues.

There is more to share at our annual meeting in Corning, NY.  Our goal is to make you proud to be a member of the NYSSRS, so much so, that you feel empowered to support your profession as you see fit.

Wishing you a safe and fun summer season.

All the Best,

Ray

2/ 2021 A letter from the President

                                                                                        February 18, 2021

Dear Friends,

As we enter a new year, we bring our encouragement and hope for positive change.  We look for things to improve all around us.  The Covid-19 vaccine distribution is continuing as we start to see the caseloads decrease.

As healthcare workers, many have already been vaccinated, however, many others in our communities are still waiting for the opportunity.   As we anticipate our dear friends and family members getting their vaccinations, we embrace change for better days ahead.

With regard to the NYSSRS “family” and positive change, we are proud to share that are very own NYSSRS past-President and current ASRT Speaker of the House of Delegates, Joe Whitton, is running for President-Elect of the ASRT.  This is an honor for the NYSSRS; we are very proud of Joe’s accomplishments over his career and admire his zeal to continue to make a difference in our profession.

Joe has been a radiologic technologist for 40 years, he has certifications in radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.  In addition, he has been affiliated with the NYSSRS for 28 years and currently is the Clinical Assistant Professor/Program Director for the SHTM/Health Science Department at Stony Brook University.

To vote, please visit ASRT.org; polls open on February 16.

All the Best,

Ray

2 Bills has been introduced in  the NYS Assembly & Senate in January  of this year to make a change in ARTICLE 35.  The first would allow PA's to perform fluoroscopic exams and the second would  permit Chiropractors a greatly expanded use of Radiologic Imaging modalities. See links below:

*See Legislative tab for more information on the the bill*

LET US KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS on both pieces of legislation!
